Very historic and beautiful! They have some of the best emersive exhibits that I have ever seen! The butterfly exhibit always makes kids happy while still learning! The old Milwaukee exhibit (2017 update) is wonderfully put together and maintained. The European village is such a great experience to have. Overall, I love it!
I love the museum. I had wanted to go and see it decorated for Christmas so I planned a trip on the free day. (First Thursday of the month) I gave it a four star because the downtown area was not as decorated as I had thought it would have been. They also had some random Christmas tree hanging upside down in the square spinning. Really odd! But the trolley was awesome and a must see.. It shows how things were back in the day and how it has evolved to now. I also thought the old movie theater was cool. It even had old Christmas movies playing, SO COOL! We then checked out other part of the museum and have to say the butterfly exhibit is a must see as well.
Great museum (now)... Recent updates put it back as a go-to place for friends, family and personal fun. Hadn't been there for a long time because it had run down and exhibit hadn't been renewed. Now, streets of old Milwaukee has been updated and renewed, good dinosaur exhibit added, old African animal exhibits have been cleaned up (THANK goodness), large video and touch screens, and audio added, good traveling exhibits come through, and an IMAX theater is in place. All good! If you haven't been in for a while, go and check it out! I'll be going back often... couldn't get to it all in one trip.
I love this museum! It is one of my favorite ever, and I have been to a lot of them, in several countries. I love the local history (Old Milwaukee and state geology stuff), natural history (dinosaurs and dioramas), butterfly living garden (wear a bright shirt, they might land right on you as soon as you enter and stand still), and the planetarium and film theater too. It's a great variety of collections, has amazing temporary exhibits (like a history of weaponry): there is literally something to interest every member of the family. The food is too expensive, of course. Then again, they have a variety of choices, for a relatively small potential 'audience'.
Special Weapons Exhibit was interesting, but a bit small. The descriptions didn't include information on materials used and were often very vague on the dates. You can do better than saying an item is "19th century." I could have figured that out myself on my own. I'm not sure how I feel about organizing the exhibit by type of weapon verses a regional or chronological layout.
